When Sammantha was just 14, she watched her mother battle depression in silence until institutionalization became the only option. Years later, facing her own mental health crisis, she discovered firsthand the gaps in our mental health system – especially for underserved communities. Today, through SocialWorx Advocacy Group, she's turning these challenging experiences into hope for others in East Texas.
In our East Texas community, the need is critical. With 243 suicides in region 4 alone last year, we're facing the highest suicide death rate per 100,000 population in the area. SocialWorx stands as the only nonprofit in Smith County specifically addressing mental health needs in underrepresented communities, providing free navigation services that bridge cultural gaps and save lives.
Every day, our Mental Health Resource Center opens its doors to community members seeking support. Through one-on-one peer support meetings, we help individuals find appropriate providers, manage their medication schedules, and learn to advocate for their needs. Our cultural understanding training ensures that healthcare providers can better serve ALL members of our community, creating lasting changes in how mental health care is delivered.
